Locket necklaces are special jewelry that is meant to keep or conceal mementos. Their greatest advantage is to keep you in touch with your lost loved ones. They evoke a romantic and sometimes religious sentimentalism. Locket necklaces make sentimental gifts for Valentines, birthdays, engagements and anniversaries.

Locket is a pendant or medallion that opens to reveal two halves called wings and are usually worn around the neck. Lockets can also be a part of a key chain or bracelet. Lockets worn around the neck are called locket necklaces.

Locket necklaces, aside from its decorative purposes, are special types of necklaces with pendants that are used to conceal or keep something important or sentimental like photograph, lock of hair, poem, etc. It features small frames and glass or plastic panels behind which photographs are placed. Since it is a necklace, the mementos kept are always worn closer to the heart.

Locket necklaces serve as constant and gentle reminder of our loved ones especially those who are no longer with us. Being reminded of losing a loved one is really painful but it makes us feel closer to that person. It keeps a lost loved one’s photograph. Locket necklaces and being able to see his or her face gives us great comfort. This is one greatest advantage a locket necklace can offer. In this way we keep in touch with them.

Lockets come in many shapes and designs. The most popular locket necklace is the silver locket. However, gold lockets are gaining popularity. Platinum, onyx, garnet and leather locket necklaces are also available.

Locket necklaces come in different types. The most common are keepsake lockets, antique lockets, jewelry lockets and picture lockets.

a. Picture lockets or photograph lockets

Picture lockets are generally enclosed on all sides and the photographs are secured by pieces of clear plastic. Most picture lockets can hold a photograph or two. Some can hold four, six or even eight pictures. Picture lockets are typically oval or heart shaped pendants that can be opened to reveal a space used for storing one or more photographs.

b. Antique lockets

Antique lockets are usually found in estate jewelry. The lockets have a bail which attaches to the necklace a chain that is attached but not fixed to the locket itself. That is why it is able to spin. Antique lockets are much sought after investments as they are valuable indeed. During the Victorian age, spinner lockets are very popular.

c. Keepsake lockets

These are lockets that are designed with a glass or plastic to protect an item, which could fall out and become lost if the locket was repeatedly opened. They do not open like picture lockets. A glass pane is put at the front so that what is inside can be seen without having to open the locket. The usual items put inside a keepsake locket are locks of hair.

d. Jewelry lockets

These are those that are more highly decorated with gemstones. They are filigree style lockets with a small cushion in the centre to which a few drops of perfume should be added. Perfume lockets are very popular during the time when personal hygiene was restricted. Perfume was used to mask the odor of a person or their companions.

Opening locket necklaces can be stubborn and difficult. To instill pressure can either destroy or damage the jewelry locket.

To carefully open a locket, place the edge of the fingernail into the space between the two wings. Then open the latch by moving your nail back and forth. This will cause the wings to come apart. You can also use a small flathead screwdriver to gently open it.
