Princess cut engagement rings are recognized by their square-shaped gemstones. Though the princess cut includes the word ‘cut’, it does not refer to a factor used to rate a diamond. The term refers to the shaping of the gems.

Princess cut is the shape that results for combining both brilliant cuts and classic steps to design the stone. Its profile or side-on shape is like an inverted pyramid with four beveled sides, which gives more sparkle and the fire to the gemstone. It is sometimes called a square modified brilliant. It has a flat top with a rectangular or square face-up shape.

With a mixture of classic step and brilliant cuts, a princess cut engagement ring shows approximately fifty facets, which is more than a rectangular emerald cut, but less than a classic round cut. Here are the reasons why it is preferred by many.

1. Princess cut is extremely popular. Though still new, princess cut is second to a round brilliant cut in popularity which makes it a more distinctive alternative option.

2. Princess cut works well with both white and colored diamonds. Since diamonds are women’s best friend, engagement rings are usually set with diamonds. The princess cut creates an amazing strike to a diamond ring. Like with other gemstones, it gives the diamond more sparkle and fire. The princess cut effectively combines the high degree of light return of a round brilliant cut with a distinctive square or rectangular shape.

3. Princess cut has more weight. This is because a princess cut has four corners with the same width as the diameter of round brilliant, which would have been cut to form a round brilliant.

Princess cut engagement rings come in many different designs, such as modern, antique, solitaire, pave setting or just a simple one. It is usually set in a four prong setting as it protects more effectively the four corners of the gemstone. Other options are the bezel setting and channel setting. It can also be customized.
